Why This Book Exists

In the spring of 2019, a team at Google announced a significant milestone: their 53-qubit quantum processor, Sycamore, had achieved “quantum supremacy.” For the first time ever, a quantum computer completed a calculation in seconds that would have taken the world’s fastest classical supercomputer ten thousand years to finish. This remarkable achievement captured headlines for a week.

Yet, almost unnoticed by the world, a parallel event had quietly unfolded 176 years earlier in Nauvoo, Illinois. There, a small group of men and women received an ordinance that, in essence, granted them unlimited, fault-tolerant, error-corrected computational power over matter, time, and eternity. They referred to this ordinance as receiving the fullness of priesthood.

My purpose in writing this book was not to compare Joseph Smith to figures such as Einstein, Maldacena, or even the researchers at Google. Instead, my quest was to understand the temple and its ordinances. As I delved deeper, the ordinances resisted being categorized merely as “symbol” or “ritual.” Rather, they functioned like working protocols—like code that actually runs and produces real effects.

After years of research tracing every major restored ordinance back to its original form in Nauvoo, then moving forward into the equations and experiments of twentieth- and twenty-first-century physics, one conclusion became unavoidable: Joseph Smith did not borrow from the science of his day. Instead, it is the science of our day that appears to be drawing from concepts that Joseph Smith introduced.
